Thoughts on Santa Claus
"Daddy," Annalee said the other day. "Santa Claus brings presents to my house -- not you, Santa Claus."
We were enjoying a warm and sunny afternoon in March in Austin on the front porch.
"He brings them to my house," she said. "Santa Claus, not you."
"OK," I said. "Santa Claus, not me."
"Not you," she said.
I wasn't sure if she was trying to clarify something for me, or for herself.
"Santa Claus brings them, not you," she said.
It probably mattered less how much she knew, when she learned it, and who she learned it from, than that what we were talking about was important.
