A Break in the Weather

Baby is strong, wise, beautiful, and funny. She is the most incredible person I have ever met. My wife and I talk about having a second child, or not, and one of the things that dissuades us is the simple fact that it seems unlikely we could feel this way about a second child. Maybe we would, though. Maybe there is a reserve of feeling trapped in us all that can only be tapped with the successive births of our children.

Today baby and I were out doing an errand on another rainy day when a break in the weather gave me the idea of stopping at the playground. I pulled the truck into the parking lot, plucked baby from her car seat, showed her the deserted playground from a vantage point high above me, and took her to the baby swings. I happened to have a paper towel with me, so I wiped the rain water from the seat. Baby seemed to get, as she swung back and forth, that we were fortunate to be enjoying the outdoors on such a day. Regardless, she’s growing fonder of the swings all the time.
