Silver Lining

Baby and mommy spent the day at the grandparents, a half-hour drive north of here. Apart from a few minutes before they left this morning, my primary contact with baby came in the form of dinnertime, when she ate her food with gusto and looked at daddy with big eyes and the occasional tired smile.

There was a silver lining during the course of the day of missing baby, and that was when I spoke to my wife on the phone. Baby heard my voice through the receiver and laughed. We thought it was potentially a coincidence, so I spoke again and baby laughed. Just to be double-sure we repeated the experiment about six more times, and baby laughed every time. She had heard her mom’s voice on the phone plenty of times and stared at the phone intently. But it just so happens that her first vocal connection through the phone happened to be with papa-san. Am I flattered? Beyond comprehension?
