Crawling 101

There’s the part of me that wants my baby to learn what she has to learn in life at her own pace, to observe and experiment as the spirit moves her, and thus to own what she does learn because she will have chosen it. Then there’s the part of me that was on all fours on the carpet with baby, or, rather, in front of baby, giving an unsolicited lesson in the finer points of crawling. She did not spontaneously follow me, as I’d hoped she might. But she did laugh as though she’d finally found someone who knew that most of the fun in life happens when you’re down low to the ground. And, who knows, she may spontaneously follow me next time.
