What Was Once Blue

For the second time, someone called baby’s eyes black today. I’d hoped during her first few months that a dark-blue rim around her brown irises would remain, a whispered reminder of my family’s light eyes. Instead, what blue was there has dived into the pools of brown and rendered them what two intelligent, and older, souls have seen as black. Blue’s a big part of black, right? Do I sound desperate?
